A good number of consumers of cannabis are well aware of the cannabinoids. Cannabinoids like THC and CBD were topics of discussion even before they became famous. But recently, another group of compounds named terpenes is under the limelight along with cannabinoids. Why are people talking about them? Let us see.

What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are organic compounds that give fruits, vegetables, and flowers their unique aroma. For example, the citrusy smell of oranges and the relaxing effects of lavender, are all due to terpenes.

Terpenes Benefits

Other than their aromatic properties, terpenes are also known for several other qualities. It was initially believed that only cannabinoids like CBD were medicinal. Studies later conducted on hemp oil and other extracts showed that terpenes are also major players in keeping us healthy. In reality, cannabinoids and terpenes work together to cause a phenomenon called the entourage effect which intensifies the effect of cannabinoids like CBD. Therefore, it is better to use a mixture of CBD and terpenes together to ensure maximum effect.

Types Of  Terpenes

At present, a minimum of around 20,000 different types of terpenes is available, among which 100 are found within the cannabis plant itself. Given below are the few prominent cannabis terpenes.

Myrcene

Myrcene is an aromatic primary terpene found in cannabis plants; it is also found in mangoes. Myrcene is responsible for the distinctive aroma, relaxing properties and anti-inflammatory properties of marijuana.

Limonene

Limonene is another terpene that is found in cannabis. Like myrcene, limonene can be found in various citrus fruits and is responsible for their citrusy smell. Limonene is known for its powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, making it a common additive in household cleaning and cosmetic products.

Pinene

Pinene is a terpene found most abundantly in pine trees. Pinene is used for centuries in herbal medicines as a strong bronchodilator because of its strong anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects.

Linalool

Linalool terpenes in lavender are widely known for its stress-relieving, anti-anxiety, and anti-depressant effects. Linalool helps to reduce anxiety and is, therefore, the ideal terpene for the treatment of anxiety.

Caryophyllene

Caryophyllene which is found in black pepper and cinnamon has a spicy, woody, and peppery scent. It is proved that this terpene is capable of treating anxiety, depression, and inflammation.

Humulene

Humulene, found in hops, cloves, and basil, actually helps to decrease appetite. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

CBD Terpenes Vapes

One of the important points to be noted while vaping CBD is that the process of carbonization can destroy many terpenes present in the CBD extract. Like cannabinoids, terpenes also have their own individual optimal temperature and thus, you should be very careful about the temperature while vaping, so as not to destroy the terpenes present in the extract .
